A guide for drivers from United Kingdom

From UK roads to Dutch roads: make a confident start

If you learned to drive in the UK, moving to the Netherlands may mean adapting familiar skills to the other side of the road. You may also be a beginner or returning after a break. Check the official route for your actual licence first, then choose lessons around the skills and journeys that matter to you.

Your licence issuer, its validity and your circumstances determine the rules, rather than your nationality.

UK-issued car licence

Check exchange before choosing a full course

Licences issued in Great Britain or Northern Ireland are on the RDW exchange list. You still need to meet the conditions and apply through your Dutch municipality.

For a valid non-EU/EFTA licence, the ordinary resident driving period is the first 185 days after relocation. Arrange your Dutch licence in time: a pending exchange application does not extend that period.

A licence exchange and a driving course serve different purposes

Use the official RDW information matching the authority that issued your licence, including whether the document is from Great Britain or Northern Ireland. Check the conditions for your own document instead of assuming that British nationality settles the issue. An exchange question does not automatically require a complete learner course.

If an exchange is available, you can still choose refresher instruction. Conversely, feeling comfortable behind the wheel does not complete a document procedure. Tell the school whether you are seeking a first licence, adapting current skills or returning to driving after time away.

Turn the switch to the right into specific practice

If driving on the left is familiar, describe the moments that require extra thought on the right: setting off, turning, selecting a lane or judging your distance from the kerb. Ask the instructor to observe these situations rather than assume that every driver trained in the UK has the same difficulty.

You may also be changing the side of the car on which you sit. Discuss the vehicle you expect to use and how the lesson car compares. Combining road position, observation and manoeuvring in a new seating position can make the practice more relevant than simply driving an easy familiar route.

  • Which turning or positioning habits should we assess?
  • How does the lesson car compare with the car I expect to use?
  • Can we review observation and position in unfamiliar situations?

Use English explanations to understand the local rule

Sharing a language does not always mean sharing the same road terminology. Ask the instructor to explain priority, road markings and cycle crossings in the context of the Dutch situation. Avoid relying on a UK comparison if it leaves the actual local rule unclear. You should be able to explain your own decision.

Compare refresher and beginner quotations according to their different purposes. Ask about lesson duration, meeting point, vehicle type and the point at which progress is reviewed. Confirm who will teach you in English, and check official test arrangements separately if your chosen route includes exams.

Understand every step

Learning in English, with clarity.

Feeling comfortable asking questions matters. Confirm lesson language with the school before you book, including how your instructor will explain road situations and give feedback.

Your lessons

Ask for an instructor who can teach in English. Discuss your experience and learning goals, rather than assuming a school offers your preferred language.

Your theory test

The CBR car theory test is available in English. Check the current booking and language options on the CBR website.

Your practical test

Agree language arrangements with your school in advance. Do not assume an English-speaking examiner; a practical-test interpreter must meet the CBR conditions.

A fair comparison

Look beyond the lesson price

A lower advertised price is only useful when you know what it covers. Ask each school for a written quote you can compare on the same basis.

01Time behind the wheel
Check the lesson duration and whether it includes pick-up or travel time. Compare an equal number of minutes, rather than the word “lesson”.
02What the quote includes
Ask about assessment lessons, learning materials, exam booking and use of the car during a test. Check which charges are separate.
03Flexibility and your car
Confirm manual or automatic, lesson cancellation terms, package expiry and refunds. Choose a realistic schedule before committing to a package.

Before you get started

A few useful answers

Do I need lessons simply because I hold a UK licence?

Not automatically. First check the official conditions for your document and circumstances. You may choose refresher lessons for confidence, while a first-time learner needs a different learning and licence plan.

Does driving experience on the left guarantee a short course?

No fixed course length can be inferred from where you trained. An assessment can identify which habits transfer easily and which situations need focused work, including road position and observation.

Are English lessons the same as arranging an official test?

No. Confirm teaching language with the school and official exam arrangements separately. An English-speaking instructor does not automatically establish the language or format of every stage of a licence application.

Can I arrange English lessons through every school on Rijmaatje?

Language availability is set by each school. Contact the school before booking and confirm that your instructor can explain lessons and feedback in English. Also agree how language will be handled during test preparation and the practical test.
